Richmond Hill, Ontario, Canada, is located in Southern Ontario, just north of Toronto. The city is mainly rural and is surrounded by the Oak Ridges Moraine and Lake Simcoe.
The topography of Richmond Hill consists mainly of rolling hills from the moraine, especially near its northern border with Markham that runs through Ballantrae. Several significant wetlands, including Wilcox Lake and Glen Stewart Ravine. The latter was once a favorite haunt of the cougars that lived in the area.
Humans have inhabited Richmond Hill for over 10,000 years. The first people to live in the area were the Huron-Wendat, who likely migrated from Lake Ontario and lived in the city’s eastern portion.
The town grew slowly but steadily, and by the late 1800s, was home to several malls and hotels. The arrival of the railroad in 1853 greatly facilitated the growth of Richmond Hill and its economy.
The town continued to grow steadily in the early 1900s, reaching 10,000 by 1921. The post-World War II period saw significant growth in Richmond Hill, doubling between 1951 and 1971.
